Chicagoan’s have led the world in building innovation since inventing the skyscraper in the late 1800s. Continuing this eminence, the city is now using bioluminescent marine bacteria to illuminate its historic boulevards without burning fossil fuels. The light emitted by the bacteria is produced by energy released from chemical reactions occurring inside the organisms. Each luminous tube lining the boulevards is a self-contained aquarium filled with saltwater, where the bacteria are cultivated with nutrients, and oxygen is circulated.
